കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ശിവരാത്രി. പെരിയാറിന്റെ മണപ്പുറത്ത് ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് വിളക്കുകൾ. ആ ആൾക്കൂട്ടത്തിൽ, സ്വർഗ്ഗസ്ഥനായ അച്ഛന്റെ ഓലക്കുടയുമായി ഗൗരി — അച്ഛന്റെ തോളിലിരുന്ന് കണ്ട ശിവരാത്രികളുടെ ഓർമ്മയിൽ.

ആലുവയിലെ മഹാദേവന് മേൽക്കൂരയില്ല. പരശുരാമൻ പണിത ക്ഷേത്രം പ്രളയം കൊണ്ടുപോയി; ഭൂതഗണങ്ങൾ ഒറ്റരാത്രികൊണ്ട് പണിയാൻ തുടങ്ങിയ ക്ഷേത്രം, കോഴി കൂവിയതോടെ പാതിയിൽ നിന്നു — ആ കോഴി വിഷ്ണുഭഗവാനായിരുന്നു എന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം. ഇതേ പുഴക്കരയിൽ ശ്രീരാമൻ ജടായുവിന് ബലിതർപ്പണം ചെയ്തു എന്നും വിശ്വാസം.
(The Mahadeva of Aluva has no roof. The flood swept away the temple Parasurama built; the temple the bhoothaganas began in one night stopped half-built when a rooster crowed, and legend says the rooster was Lord Vishnu. It is also believed that on this riverbank Sree Rama offered the last rites for Jatayu.)

ശിവരാത്രി രാവ് മുഴുവൻ ഉറങ്ങാതിരുന്ന്, പുലർച്ചെ പെരിയാറിൽ പിതൃക്കൾക്കായി ബലിയിടുന്ന ആയിരങ്ങൾ. സ്നേഹം മരിക്കുന്നില്ല; അത് പുഴപോലെ ഒഴുകിക്കൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കുന്നു.
