കാലടിയിലെ ഒരു കൊച്ചുവീട്ടിൽ, ആര്യാംബ എന്ന അമ്മയ്ക്ക് ആകെയുണ്ടായിരുന്നത് ഒരു മകൻ മാത്രം... ശങ്കരൻ. എട്ടാം വയസ്സിൽ അവന് ഒരേയൊരു ആഗ്രഹം: സന്യാസിയാകണം. "നീ പോയാൽ... പിന്നെ എനിക്ക് ആരാ?" എന്ന അമ്മയുടെ ചോദ്യത്തിനു മുന്നിൽ അവൻ പോയില്ല. (In a small house in Kalady, the only one Aryamba had was her son… Shankara. At eight, he had just one wish: to become a sannyasi. Before his mother's question, "If you go… who do I have?", he did not go.)

പുഴയിൽ ഒരു മുതല അവന്റെ കാലിൽ പിടിച്ച ആ പ്രഭാതം. ഹൃദയം നുറുങ്ങി അമ്മ സമ്മതിച്ചു. പടിക്കൽ വെച്ച് ഒരു വാക്ക്: "അമ്മ ഒന്നു മനസ്സിൽ വിളിച്ചാൽ മതി... ഞാൻ വരും." (Then came the morning a crocodile seized his leg in the river. Heart breaking, his mother said yes. At the gate, one promise: "Just call me once in your heart, Amma… I will come.")

വർഷങ്ങളോളം എല്ലാ സന്ധ്യയ്ക്കും വിളക്കു കൊളുത്തി പടിക്കലേക്കു നോക്കിയിരുന്ന അമ്മ. ഒടുവിൽ ആ വിളി... ദൂരെ ഹിമാലയത്തിൽ മകൻ അതു കേട്ടു. സന്യാസിമാർ ചെയ്യാൻ പാടില്ലാത്തതായിട്ടും, നാട്ടുകാർ ആരും കൂടെ നിൽക്കാതിരുന്നിട്ടും, കൊടുത്ത വാക്ക് അവൻ പാലിച്ചു. (For years, every evening, she lit the lamp and watched the gate. At last came the call… and far away in the Himalayas, her son heard it. Though sannyasis may not perform last rites, and no villager stood by him, he kept his word.)

ആ കൊച്ചുകുട്ടിയെ ലോകം ഇന്ന് അറിയുന്നത്... ആദി ശങ്കരാചാര്യർ എന്നാണ്. (Today the world knows that little boy as… Adi Shankaracharya.)
