उत्तर केरल की पाडिकुट्टी अंतर्जनम बरसों तक संतान के लिए शिव से प्रार्थना करती रहीं। एक भोर, नदी किनारे की चट्टान पर एक नन्हा, मुस्कुराता बच्चा मिला। उन्होंने उसे अपने बेटे की तरह पाला। (Padikutti Antharjanam of North Kerala prayed to Shiva for a child for years. One dawn, on a rock by the river, she found a smiling little baby. She raised him as her own son.)

वह बेटा जंगलों में घूमता, भूखों के साथ बैठकर खाता। जब उसने पिता से पूछा, "भूखे की भी कोई जात होती है?", उसकी आँखों में आग धधक उठी। माँ की पुकार, "बेटा, ये आँखें बंद कर लो... अपनी माँ के लिए," सुनकर उसने वह ज्वाला अपने भीतर समेट ली। मान्यता है कि तभी से मुत्तप्पन थेय्यम नकली आँखें पहनता है। (The son roamed the forests and ate with the hungry. When he asked his father, "Does a hungry man have a caste?", fire blazed in his eyes. Hearing his mother's cry, "Son, close these eyes... for your mother," he held that fire within. It is believed that ever since, the Muthappan Theyyam wears false eyes.)

"जब भूख लगे, माँ को याद कर लेना।" "जब भी किसी को भूखा देखूँगा, माँ, मैं तुम्हें याद करूँगा।" उसी वचन की तरह, आज भी परश्शिनिकडवु से कोई भूखा नहीं लौटता। ("When you're hungry, remember your mother." "Whenever I see anyone hungry, I'll remember you." True to that promise, even today no one leaves Parassinikadavu hungry.)
