केरल के कालड़ी गाँव में, माँ आर्यम्बा के पास बस एक ही सहारा था... उनका बेटा शंकर। आठ साल की उम्र में उसकी बस एक ही इच्छा थी: संन्यासी बनना। माँ ने पूछा, "तू चला गया... तो फिर मेरा कौन है?" और बेटा रुक गया। (In the village of Kalady in Kerala, mother Aryamba had only one support… her son Shankara. At eight he had just one wish: to become a sannyasi. His mother asked, "If you go… who will I have?" and the son stayed.)

फिर एक सुबह, नदी में एक मगरमच्छ ने उसका पैर पकड़ लिया। टूटे दिल से माँ ने हाँ कह दी। दरवाज़े पर बेटे का वचन: "माँ, बस एक बार मन में पुकारना... मैं आऊँगा।" (Then one morning, a crocodile seized his leg in the river. With a broken heart his mother said yes. At the gate, the son's promise: "Amma, just call me once in your heart… I will come.")

बरसों तक माँ हर शाम दीया जलाकर दरवाज़े की ओर देखती रहीं। आख़िर वो पुकार आई... और दूर हिमालय में बेटे ने सुन ली। संन्यासी ऐसा नहीं कर सकते, गाँव से कोई मदद को नहीं आया, फिर भी उसने माँ का अंतिम संस्कार ख़ुद किया। दिया हुआ वचन... उसने निभाया। (For years she lit the lamp every evening and watched the gate. At last the call came… and far away in the Himalayas, her son heard it. Sannyasis may not do this, and no one from the village came to help, yet he performed his mother's last rites himself. He kept his word.)

उस छोटे-से बच्चे को आज दुनिया जानती है... आदि शंकराचार्य के नाम से। (Today the world knows that little boy as… Adi Shankaracharya.)
